Referee Arthur Merchante Jr. has to force Forrest to touch gloves with Quartey before the bout. In the third round, Forrest hurts Quartey with an uppercut but loses a point in the ninth for a low blow. After twelve highly competitive rounds, Forrest is given the nod by a close but unanimous decision.

While waiting on a possible rematch with undisputed Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor, Winky Wright takes a fight in his home state of Florida against veteran Ike Quartey. Wright catches Quartey with a right hook amid a flurry in the second round, knocking him to his hands and knees for an official knockdown. In the seventh, Wright buckles Quartey's knees with a left hand, and Referee Frank Santore Jr. mistakenly rules another knockdown. Quartey lets his hands go in the championship rounds but is too far behind on points to catch up to Wright, who wins a wide unanimous decision.

WBC Welterweight Champion Oscar De La Hoya finds himself in the deepest water of his career when he faces Ike Quartey. Just when De La Hoya begins finding his groove with a knockdown of Quartey early in the sixth round, the champion finds himself on the seat of his pants moments later. As Quartey appears to be pulling ahead on the scorecards, De La Hoya pulls out an incredible rally, knocking his challenger down in the twelfth round and nearly taking him out. Quartey makes it to the final bell but loses a controversial split decision to De La Hoya.
