Instead, Toney puts on a performance for the ages, out dueling Barkley in every facet of the game. Toney blasts Barkley's mouthpiece out in the third and fourth rounds with solid power punching. With his left eye closed and his face badly swollen, Barkley's corner stops the fight after nine rounds.

Thomas Hearns goes for revenge when he puts his WBC Light Heavyweight Championship on the line against IBF Super Middleweight Champion Iran Barkley in another great fight. Hearns starts well, landing the harder punches in the first few rounds and shaking Barkley up with a left hook in the third; however, he walks into a left hook from Barkley in the fourth that drops him flat on his back. Although Hearns beats the count and fights back admirably, he suffers a damaged nose in the seventh and is stunned by a left hook in the ninth. Both fighters leave it all on the table in the championship rounds, but it's Barkley who lifts the title and gets a second win over Hearns with a split decision.
